West Virginia University

Wireless ResNet

West Virginia University currently offers 802.11a/b/g WiFi network access in Boreman North, Boreman South, Fieldcrest Hall, Lincoln Hall and Stalnaker Hall. The official wireless network in the residence halls is "WVU.ResNet".

We plan to add a wireless network to Bennett Tower, Lyon Tower, Braxton Tower, Brooke Tower and Arnold Hall during the Fall 2008 semester.

Important notes about the wireless network in the residence halls:

  • The wireless network is an add-on for convenience and mobility. It is not considered a replacement for the wired network connection in your room. In essence, when you choose to use the wireless network, you are choosing mobility over speed and reliability.
  • The wireless network is best used for low-bandwidth applications such as e-mail, instant messaging and web browsing.
  • If you are downloading or streaming music/movies (see Illegal Downloading), playing on-line games or engaging in other high-bandwidth or low-latency activities, we strongly recommend that you use the wired network.
  • An activated MasterID account is required to use ResNet's wireless network. If you have not activated your MasterID account, you will need an active network connection to do so.

Please refer to Going Wireless for step-by-step instructions for connecting to WVU.ResNet.

I have my own access point or wireless router, may I setup my own wireless network connection in my room?

West Virginia University policy prohibits the use of unauthorized wireless access points. Unauthorized wireless access points are defined as wireless access points which are not managed by the University's Network Operations group. Unauthorized (or rogue) wireless access points may conflict with the University's wireless network, and they pose a substantial security risk to the University's network.

ResNet users are permitted to connect routers to ResNet. These routers may also have built-in wireless access points. If you have such a router, you must disable the wireless access point in the router's configuration. If you need assistance disabling the wireless access point, please contact the OIT Help Desk.

West Virginia University will periodically scan ResNet for unauthorized wireless access points. Network access will be suspended for any user found in violation of University policy.

I can see other wireless networks besides WVU.ResNet, may I use them?

These networks are not supported by West Virginia University and may be unsafe. If you choose to use them, you do so at your own risk.

Are there other wireless hot spots?

West Virginia University also offers 802.11a/b/g WiFi network access at various hot spots around the campus. Refer to Wireless at WVU for additional information.
