Each resident is provided with one wired network connection in their room. Therefore, if you intend to connect more
than one computing device to ResNet, you will need to purchase
a router. The router will allow you to have all of
your devices connected simultaneously. You will also need a router if you wish to connect a
game console
to ResNet for online play. Use of a router must be done in compliance with the
ResNet Acceptable Use Policy.
Router Connection Guide
- Plug your router's power adapter into both the router and the wall. If there is a power indicator light, make sure that it is lit. The default configuration on most routers is sufficient to connect to ResNet. If your router was previously configured to work with a cable/DSL modem, you may need to reset it to the default configuration before it will work on ResNet. To set the router to the default configuration, press and hold the Reset button (usually located on the back or bottom of the router) for thirty seconds. Depending on the model of router, you may have to use a pen/pencil tip to push in the Reset button.
- Using an Ethernet patch cable, connect your computer to a numbered LAN port on the router. Do NOT connect your computer to the "WAN" or "Internet" port on the router.
- If you are using a router with wireless capabilities, the wireless feature must be disabled! You will need to reference your router's user manual (often supplied on a CD) to determine how to disable the wireless feature on your router. In general, after logging into your router, it is an option in the configuration. It is against University policy to setup unauthorized wireless access points on the WVU network. Failure to disable the wireless features of your router will result in suspension of network service.
- Using a second Ethernet patch cable, connect your router's "WAN" or "Internet" port to the active network jack on your wall. For assistance in identifying your network jack, refer to the pictures in our Getting Connected section. If you cannot find the "WAN" or "Internet" port on your router, please contact the OIT HelpDesk for assistance. Connecting your router to ResNet via any other port except the "WAN" or "Internet" port will cause a loss of service to other ResNet users and will ultimately result in suspension of your network service.
- You should now be able to access the ResNet Signup Wizard on the computer that you connected to the router earlier in this tutorial by directing your browser to a website. After completing the ResNet Signup Wizard on that machine your router will be registered under your name. Therefore, all other devices (computers, game consoles, PDAs, etc.) connected to the router will operate on the Internet through your ResNet connection.
