Software Configuration Guide

Linux

Although it is not supported for use on ResNet, a few students prefer the Linux operating system for its flexibility and range of free software. Linux is for expert users. Although it is becoming more user-friendly, for a novice user it can still be difficult to install and configure. Because Linux is not supported for use on ResNet, connecting to ResNet with Linux is entirely up to the user.

If you wish to use a Linux operating system, the websites listed below will help introduce the experienced computer user to the Linux operating system; however, this is by no means a comprehensive guide to Linux.

It is highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the security features of Linux. If you wish to use Linux on ResNet, you must install your distribution's most recent security updates. Failure to do so is a violation of the ResNet Acceptable Use Policy and may result in the termination of your network access.

www.linuxnewbie.org
A central resource for linux newbies, Linuxnewbie.org features a large collection of documentation on basic Linux problems. It is less technical than most Linux help sites and oriented to the first-time or inexperienced user.
www.linuxdoc.org
The Linux Documentation Project contains a large amount of technical documents for Linux. Primarily focused on FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), the LDP delivers very in-depth material on common and obscure subjects. Unfortunately, LDP documentation is not designed for the average user, and may be difficult to understand without some experience using Linux.
